When we think of old technology, how many of us think of Token Rings?

I had the delightful opportunity to meet a gentleman that had just converted from Token Ring to RJ 45.
So he decided to have a little fun with the remnants of ancient technology, while still having a sense of humor.

Token ring is just an older technology to network devices together, that has been surpassed with more advanced options like fiber and Ethernet. I hope all of you smile as much as I did when I saw this picture.

None Shall Pass!

In today’s world of customer relationships, constant communication is key. But how do you stay connected when you are at the office, on your cell phone or at home? If someone calls you at one of these places, and leaves a voice mail, there is a chance it will not reach us when we need to receive that important phone call. Thankfully, there is a free option provided by Google, called Google Voice.

Google addresses the need for constant communication by adding yet another number that links them all together. Think of them as your automatic switchboard keeping a constant connection with you and your clients. Google Voice redirects all incoming calls into one phone number to rule them all. This is the Lord of the Rings of Phone Numbers. Gandalf would be proud.

Plenty of numbers are available with a large selection of area codes reserved for Google. Just think when someone calls your Google Voice number, all phones with ring depending on whatever phone numbers are linked to it. If you don’t have the chance to respond to the call, the client can leave a message which is converted to plain text and stored in your email inbox, along with their original voice mail.

If you are not using Google Voice, and you have multiple lines that need to be connected, get it. The value that Google Voice offers and great service are essential to the success of staying connected with your clients.

The following are just a list of the many features that come with Google Voice

NUMBER PORTABILITY

CALL FORWARDING FLEXIBILITY

TRANSCRIPTION AND DELIVERY

CALL RECORDING

CALL MONITORING AND BLOCKING

On our Contact US page, our clients call us to get a resolution. Instead of having to play a guessing game of where we could be, whether we are in a server room, away from his desk, or on the go, meeting with clients, Klinetech can ensure you stay connected.

You simply click on our Google Voice button, featured on this website, enter your phone number, and Google voice calls you. This way, we offer the best level of customer service by assuring you that help is just a phone call away.

To get an inside look on more things you can do with Google Voice, please go here. This website shows you the results of using Google Voice through short videos and the option to try it out. Trying out this service will yield many more smiles knowing that you can increase your response rate all while keeping your client happy.

Imagine you just bought a computer. You want to create compelling graphics, put together tremendous word processing projects, and be protected from viruses. All while working on a shoe string budget. You could very easily purchase these products, spending more than the actual machine costs.

If you have to renew licensing fee’s each year, this could translate into hundreds of dollars in additional costs. Now think if you were a business, and you had multiple computers that all needed to be supported. You’re looking at hundreds, thousands of added costs that you can not afford.

Thankfully, there is a solution that is allowing others to keep their shoe string budget without breaking the bank. This solution is freeware. Freeware is royalty free software that allows users the ability to do things that would normally cost money. The joy of using a pc is the wide collection of freeware out there to accommodate your every need.

One freeware that you need to be aware of is Gimp, which can be found at www.gimp.org.

Gimp is a free, image manipulation program that works on a variety of operating systems including Linux and Mac OS X. You can edit pictures, change fonts, and create a variety of different graphics, logos, and banners. When you need more than just what your system has to offer in the realm of Graphic Design, go with gimp.

Another freeware product is Open Office, which can be found at www.openoffice.org.

Open Office is a full fledge office suite that is a free alternative to some of the more familiar pay products. If you need a word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation solution, Open Office might be just what the doctor ordered. Open Office is backwards compatible with all major office suites and allows users to do everything they would normally need to do.

Free Anti Virus has been the talk of the town, as it has become the number one most downloaded freeware recently. Normally, one would pay a set fee per year that would include a single license, any additional computers would require additional licenses. Now, one can go to avira.com, avg.com, and avast.com to find which is the best for you. In the past, Anti virus programs would run scheduled scans since computers did not have the power to run in real time without slowing down the machine. Now, resident shields exist that allows the users to be protected while still carrying on with their daily activities. Finding the write antivirus depends on what your needs are. I would suggest trying each one to see what works best for you.

There are so many freeware solutions out there, that it can be an overwhelming process. Thankfully, there are sites like www.download.com and www.techsupportalert.com that provide access to the programs and reviews. Take this one step at a time, and make sure you find the freeware that addresses your needs the best.

Why would you use Microsoft Outlook and Office products when there is much cheaper option available for business users? Email, document editing, and calendar functions provide all in one solutions that are easily integrated thought computer and phone.

In my opinion, Google offers the best email solution called Gmail. Gmail offers ton of space, spam protection, and mobile access. Several gigs of space allowing you to archive all your old messages for accessibility and organization. Spam protection filtering out messages that are known to be malicious.

The ability to access email through your phone so that you can keep in touch with your business contacts. This is by far the best email solution for communication.

Document editing at its best providing access to thousand of options addressing the growing needs of business. One is able to have word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation tools at the touch of a button that are stored for easy access anywhere. Do you have an invoice you need at your disposal for billing? A presentation for clients on a service or Product? Ways to keep track of daily expenses while on the go? Always having your documents available on any platform.

Google Calendar provides access to planning out your day with a key clicks and mouse drags. Alerts of events are sent on screen, through email, and even your mobile phone ensuring that you never miss that important appointment. Google Calendar can be shared, updated and viewed by multiple user so everyone can be on the same page. With Google Calendar, you will never have to worry about missing your meetings again.

If you want to take things to the next level of business, Google offers a business class email solution of 25 GB of storage and 1 GB of Google Docs for $50 per year, per user. This is a drastic change versus the traditional email offerings of Gmail. If you are a power user, and want the best Google has to offer, this option is right for you. 24/7 support through phone and email are also an added bonus that delivers the solutions you need anytime, anywhere.

Using Google Apps takes the headaches out of putting your faith in traditional Apps, as Google Apps is as easy as it comes to use. A much cheaper solution that is available at the touch of a button. It provides an effective interface and accessibility, that give you the tools you need to succeed.

Mac seems like a wonderful option if you’re tired of dealing with PC virus. There are still Mac virus’ and spyware outlined in numerous articles on the web. Although its not as prevalent, the threat still lurks in the back ground.

http://cnet.co/cUN2lg
http://bit.ly/l6wk3Z

Having the proper protection is key, which includes having multiple shells of protection. These need to be implemented from the beginning so that you can have a better chance of protecting yourself. No system, Mac or PC, or even linux is 100% secure.

If i were to purchase a computer, depending on the needs you just listed.

Browse the Internet

Email

Type

i would look at something like this

http://tinyurl.com/lxuxom

For $199 with free shipping and windows xp, this is the best deal I have seen. I had a client yesterday who was in the same shoes as you were, and they chose to order this item.

I base this on the www.consumersearch.com website, which takes a combination of all the best reviews. I also base this on what 90% of what people use a pc for Internet Browsing, Email and word processing.

————————————
I’m getting ready to replace the computer in my den, and I’m thinking of getting a Mac. I guess I’m just getting tired of all the viruses and crashes we’ve been having in this house. In the last year, 5 of our computers have crashed, including 2 laptops, and even though the Mac’s more expensive, I’ve heard from many people that you don’t have to worry nearly as much about viruses and crashes with them…true?

I personally have never encountered a Mac that has a virus or spyware so if you are tired of dealing with Ad ware and Spyware, A mac might be a valid choice enough to go ahead and purchase one. Having the proper protection is key, although I have had multiple layers of security, and my computer still gets infected from time to time.

Advantage: MAC

Also, if I put a Mac in my den, will that affect the other computers in the house in any way?

In the past, this was a Huge Concernation as Mac’s and Pc’s didn’t play nicely together. Such tasks as sharing printers, files, and other media was a nightmare and a frusterating experience. All that has changed, as I have set up networks with both PC and mac playing nicely together.

Advantage: EVEN

Can you think of a reason why I should get a PC over a Mac, if all I’m going to do is browse the Internet, do email, and type in my den?

Time and Money. You will be spending more on a Mac when all is said and done. Period. This includes more money out of your pocket as well as your personal time learning something new. Some people like me enjoy learning new things and love to help others learn as well. Others like to stick to what the know and shy away from anything new. The Quality of the Mac Interface blows windows out of the water, as it’s clear windows vista is an exact copy of MAC os X. There is no comparison with the beautiful interface, design and ease of use. The choice is yours. While I feel that learning the Mac is an extremely easy process, the best advice is coming from someone who already has one. He said “Forget everything you ever knew about a computer.” I think someone who has never touched a PC would have an easier time learning the Mac then someone who is a Pro at Windows because they would naturally want to do this the windows way. the same arguement could be made with a first time windows user, but using a mac just makes sense.

Cost PC Advantage

Quality Mac Advantage

Time EVEN

PC over a Mac, if all I’m going to do is browse the Internet, do email, and type in my den?

This can be accomplished by both, it’s just your choice how you want to proceed. For me, spending 199 on a pc that can handle all of the makes sense.

Some people are tired of dealing with windows virus and spyware, and the mac offers an escape. If you’re not aware, you can easily install windows xp on a mac and it will allow you to have both worlds at your fingertips.

I’ve also heard the Macs have terrific movie editing software, which I’d like to use. What do you think?

Depends on how you look at it

The which-is-better debate has been raging for years. Here’s our take on using those two different platforms for video editing:

The Mac Experience

you’ll be seen as cool, as different, as a creative/media type, or as someone who’s too thick to get to grips with Windows

the unit will be visually appealing. Apple cases are well designed and match the monitors and other peripherals

you are probably less at risk from viruses each time you go on the internet. Virus writers tend to concentrate their limited attention span on creating viruses for Windows based machines

Apple has some good software including iMovie, iDVD and iTunes

you’ll have to put up with the silly names like iMovie, iDVD & iTunes

There’s only one butt to kick if your system doesn’t work. No getting fobbed off by the software manufacturer saying the thingymijg is not compatible with the widgetiwoo and that the third party supplied whatyamaycallit is screwing up the operating system registry

downside to the one-butt-to-kick principle is that if the one butt is not around you’ll have no butt to kick. That is an inherent weakness in all proprietary solutions – what happens if the company ever goes bust?

you can use Final Cut Pro (only available on a Mac)

The PC Experience

kick-ass speed, kick-ass speed, kick-ass speed. The top PC always beats the top Mac.

new developments – from dual processor operation to 64 bit computing – come out on the PC first

better value, wider choice of components, easy upgrade paths

the huge market share of the PC makes it something that WILL be around for a long time to come.

a lot of the best video editing products are available for the PC only

availability of lots of resources from advice, tips, support forums, and manuals to training videos, help, and online discussion groups mean that the PC user is quite spoilt really

there’s a phenomenal range of software available for PC users from a wide range of video editing software to special effects applications, format conversion programs and a range of other suites and utilities

competition is good. It means that component prices from CPUs to video editing cards are being constantly improved and becoming more affordable

once you get to grips with the interface, the menu system, right-clicking with the mouse, and shortcut keys you’ll find that you can navigate quite adeptly around any Windows application

A little known secret though is that windows xp has Windows Movie Maker.

This is taken from the wikipedia site

Windows Movie Maker is a basic video creating/editing software included in Microsoft Windows. It contains features such as effects, transitions, titles/credits, audio track, timeline narration, and Auto Movie. New effects and transitions can be made and existing ones can be modified using XML code. Windows Movie Maker is also a basic audio track editing program. It can apply basic effects to audio tracks such as fade in or fade out. The audio tracks can then be exported in the form of a sound file instead of a video file.

You can download it here

http://cnet.co/jlXOWR

Its an entry level to Movie Making so if your looking for something more powerful, there are other third party options.

The Terrific movie editing software is most likely Final Cut Pro.

You can learn more about it here

http://bit.ly/7iS6J

and

http://bit.ly/sr1g

All in all, It comes down to what is most important to you

Time, Cost, or Quality.

As we reviewed above the Time is on equal ground.

Cost comes down to how much you want to spend. You can easily spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on a computer whether it be a pc or a mac.

From my experience, I buy a low end PC, and upgrade parts when I need them because technology changes so fast.

Theres no sense in buying the best thing out there and having it go obsolete a few years later.

From what you have told me, Quality seems to matter most, as you are tired of dealing with virus and malware.

Mac offers the escape and with the added bonus of being able to load windows xp onto it. It comes to be a win win situation.

The choice is yours.
